The Bay Street public toilet redevelopment forms part of the amenities along Petone Foreshore, providing modern, accessible facilities for locals and visitors enjoying this popular coastal destination.
Working with Hutt City Council, Permaloo developed a custom-designed facility incorporating four individual toilet cubicles and a dedicated special needs room. Accessibility was a key consideration, ensuring the new amenities cater to a wider range of users and provide a practical, welcoming public facility.
Constructed from 40MPa reinforced precast concrete, the building is designed for durability in a demanding coastal environment. Relief-patterned exterior walls introduce an architectural element to the robust concrete structure, while a monopitch Colorsteel MAXX roof provides additional protection from the elements.
Internally, the facility features hard-wearing stainless steel fixtures, anti-slip tiled flooring, automatic lighting and easy-clean surfaces, all selected to support regular public use and straightforward ongoing maintenance.
To minimise disruption along the busy foreshore, the design incorporates a factory-finished roof, reducing the amount of construction work required on-site. The project scope also includes demolition of the existing facility, foundation works and surrounding landscaping.
The result is a thoughtfully designed public amenity that balances accessibility, durability and visual appeal, providing a long-term asset for the Petone community and foreshore visitors.
